Background
Cyprus joined the MECC in May 1996; however, the Cyprus Cancer Registry (CyCR) was developed several years earlier, in 1990. CyCR functions as a unit of the Ministry of Health:
- The Coordinator, Health Monitoring Unit, holds official responsibility.
- The Permanent Secretary of the Minister of Health holds administrative responsibility.
The CyCR Advisory Board comprises members from:
- Ministry of Health
- Statistics Department of Ministry of Health
- Pancyprian Medical Association
- Association of Histopathologists
- Two charitable organisations:
- Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society
- Association of Cancer Patients and Friends
Data collection for the CyCR covers the Government-controlled region of Cyprus. It is comprised of five administrative districts:
- Lefkosia
- Larnaca
- Lemesos
- Pafos
- Ammochostos
The CyCR uses these same five districts in its data collection and analysis efforts.
