Background
Cancer has been a notifiable disease in Turkey since 1982.The Cancer Control Department of the Ministry of Health has been collecting notifications and publishing as booklets, in Turkish and English, since 1989. However, notifications represent only a part of real cases and forms are not standardized in line with international standards. Therefore, to calculate real figures of incidences in Turkey, a project was established to establish a few cancer registries representing the whole country. The Izmir Cancer Registry is the first and single cancer registry in Turkey meeting the international standards.The Izmir Cancer Registry (ICR) is a recording and research center that collects cancer data from the whole population in line with international standards, since April 1992. Not only all of the hospitals of Izmir province concerned with cancer diagnosis and/or therapy, but also all oncology centers and pathology laboratories are among the data resources of ICR. Software of ICR is CanReg-4 of IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) and the coding base is the Turkish version of ICD-O-3. ICR is a member of IARC (International Association of Cancer Registries) and ENCR (European Network of Cancer Registries). The first international paper of the center was published at European Journal of Cancer: Fidaner, C, Eser, SY, Parkin, DM: Incidence in Izmir in 1993–1994: first results from Izmir Cancer Registry.
